EEC invited to study regional organizations' experience on competition protection at UNCTAD annual sessions

10/20/2020
Arman Shakkaliev, representative of the EEC Competition and Antitrust Regulation Unit, spoke about the goals of introducing regional competition norms in the Eurasian Economic Union and results of the Eurasian Economic Commission's work on competition and antitrust law enforcement over five years at the VIII UN Online-Conference on Competition and Consumer Rights Protection.

According to the speaker, the OECD and UNCTAD were carrying out a large number of studies of regional organizations in recent years, based on which it can be concluded that few of the organizations exercise supranational powers in the field of competition, and some do not have them at all, as noted by Arman Shakkaliev. To discuss these problems and search for ways to resolve them, the EEC representative suggested using the venue for annual sessions of the UNCTAD Intergovernmental Group of Experts.

Efficient regional cooperation is impossible without mutual interest in the results of such cooperation, mutual trust and guarantees for the protection of confidential and other sensitive information,” mentioned the EEC representative.
