Gohar Barseghyan: “The pandemic has shown the need for coordinated actions at the level of integration associations”

10/1/2020
On September 29, the Eurasian Economic Commission and the ASEAN Secretariat held a round table “EAEU and ASEAN: adaptation mechanisms of countries to support integration development in conditions of a crisis”. The discussion was moderated by Gohar Barseghyan, Director of the EEC Integration Development Department. The event took place as part of the seminar “Measures of Russia and the ASEAN Countries to Combat COVID-19 and Support Economic Recovery”.

“Coronacrisis” demonstrated the expediency of joining efforts of the international community in the fight against the spread of infection. Along with the measures taken at the national level, it is obvious that coordinated actions are also needed at the level of regions and integration associations”, Gohar Barseghyan stated.

The EEC representative shared the experience of the Commission on strengthening economic cooperation to overcome the negative effects of the pandemic. “The Commission participates in the implementation of a comprehensive plan of measures in the field of health care and sanitary and epidemiological well-being of the population to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection COVID-19 in the territories of the Union states. Moreover, the Commission is working on the proposals of the parties to zero import customs duties on materials and components necessary for the effective functioning of the industries most affected by the pandemic”, said the director of the department.

Gohar Barseghyan also noted that deepening the cooperation with ASEAN is one of the priorities for the EAEU, especially in times of crisis: “We are focused on the effective implementation of the cooperation program and the formation of a separate EAEU-ASEAN dialogue mechanism”.

Representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat, in turn, emphasized the need to further strengthen interaction between integration associations.
